Autumn 2

The Pantomime Visited WPS (Oh no it didn't! Oh yes it did!)

We really enjoyed a visit of the pantomime ‘Puss in Boots’.

We used our knowledge of the planets to create our own Solar System calendars. We had a go at trying to make our planets look spherical.

Solar System Calendars

We learnt about how to shade and use hatching techniques to make circles look spherical. We tried this out in our sketch books and then used these skills to create our own Solar System artwork. We turned these into calendars and took them home as a gift for our families.

Design a Moon Buggy

We learnt about what the conditions are like on Mars and what it would be like to explore it. We designed our own Mars buggies with specific features.

Phases of the Moon Wreaths

We learnt about the phases of the moon and created our own wreaths.

Invent an Alien

We have been enjoying 'The Jamie Drake Equation' by Christopher Edge and have recently looked at Chapter 2 in more detail. In this chapter, the children are set the task of inventing their own alien as part of their homework. We really wanted to have a go at this ourselves! We chose to work individually or as a group or pair. We hope you like our designs- we had great fun doing them and enjoyed the chance to use our imagination and be creative.

An Ideal World

We thought about what the world will look like in 50 years if we continue to treat it in the same way. We also drew what we think the ideal world should look like.

Heliocentric or Geocentric

Today, we discussed the geocentric and heliocentric models of planetary motion. We discovered that, in ancient times, it was believed that Earth was at the centre of the Solar System and all the planets and Sun orbited around it (geocentric model). It was later believed that the Sun is actually at the centre of the Solar System (heliocentric model). We learnt about the work of two famous scientists, Copernicus and Galileo, and debated who we felt deserved the title of 'Greatest Scientific Investigator'. 

Children In Need

We raised money for Children in Need by coming to school in something yellow or spotty.

We worked really hard to research the planets in the Solar System and create our own information pages. We hope you like them; Miss Pritchard gave us a Shine Award for them!

📺🍿 Popcorn Party 🍿📺

We finally earned all our letters to spell out ‘POPCORN PARTY’, so we had a class treat and watched a film and ate popcorn. This time, we voted for ‘Christmas Chronicles’- it’s never too early for a good Christmas film. Now, we are working hard to get out next treat.

Maths: Roman Numerals

We have been learning to read and write numbers to 3000 using Roman numerals. We really enjoyed this challenging jigsaw puzzle. 🧩

Science: Proving that the Earth is Spherical

We used small toys on a flat and curved surface to prove whether the Earth is flat or spherical, as investigated by the famous philosopher, Aristotle.

Joy of Moving with Jake (Derby County Community Trust)

Jake is teaching us all about how to stay healthy and the importance of being physical.

Week 1: We thought about what physical activity is and did an investigation about our pulse rate following moderate and vigorous exercise. We also thought of our own examples for moderate and vigorous activities. Then, we played the cone game, stomp and splat- we had to really listen, focus and concentrate!

Basketball with Stedy

This term, we are improving our basketball skills with Stedy. We love his sessions!

We created these amazing self portraits for the whole school display in the hall. We think they’re even better than our previous ones.

Anglo-Saxon Wool Dyeing

We had a go at dyeing wool with natural materials: beetroot, turmeric and blueberries.

Anglo-Saxon Illuminated Letters

We learnt about how the Anglo-Saxons illustrated their important writing with illuminated letters. Many people at the time couldn’t read, so it helped them to know what the writing was about. Here are some of our own creations.

We have worked really hard to design and sew our own Anglo-Saxon shields. Concentration, patience and perseverance were key! 🧵🪡

🦋 Austin’s Butterfly 🦋 

We watched a video about a boy called Austin who was asked to draw a butterfly. We learnt about how his classmates critiqued his work and helped him to make it better. They used positive language and gave constructive feedback and Austin maintained a real ‘can do’ attitude. We had a go at this activity for ourselves and are going to work on this throughout the year.

🍦 Maths- The Ice Cream Investigation 🍦

We solved a problem where we had to find out how many combinations of double ice creams could be made from six different flavours.

📦 🪄 Sentence Stacking- The Magic Box by Kit Wright 🪄 📦 

We are enjoying reading and sentence stacking our own version of this poem. Next up, we will be thinking of a theme for our own box and writing independent poems.

🏃‍♂️ Fun Run 🏃🏽‍♀️

On Friday, we had a great time taking part in the fun run. We supported the Key Stage One children and enjoyed cheering them on as they did their 15 minute run. Then it was our turn. We ran really well for 20 minutes, and everyone tried their hardest. We all ran over a mile; some of us ran over 2 miles and even over 3 miles. We are hoping to raise lots of money for a new trim trail. Go Team WPS! 🏃‍♀️🏃🏿 🏃‍♂️ 🏃🏃🏽‍♀️

🎨 All About Me Self-Portraits 🧑🏼‍🎨 

We learnt about the artist Julian Opie and followed a video to create our own self-portraits. Some of us decided to copy Opie’s style. We then thought about what makes us special and what qualities we have. ⭐️ We may all be different but together we make a great team! ⭐️

In our first week, we thought about what we know about Year 5 and our teacher, what we would like to know, what we want Miss Pritchard to know about us and our aims for the year.
