Week 2

Autumn Term 1 - Week 2:

In English this week, the children have begun to write their setting description about the Galapagos Islands.  They used videos and images to find out about what it was like on the islands, and then generated a wide range of descriptive words and phrases on their planning sheets.  Following this, the children wrote their openings to the piece of writing, ensuring that the text hooked the reader with precise language.

In geography, the class have been using historical maps of Willington to see how land use has changed throughout the years.  Using the 1920 Ordnance Survey map as a starting point, the children used this to compare how Willington had changed and grown in size.  The children noticed how Oaks Road was on the original 1920s map, along with a methodist chapel on Repton Road.  By the 1960s, Trent Avenue had been built, however the present location of the school was not on the maps until more recently.  The children will now use their mapping skills that they have learnt over the last two years when they take part in their residential visit in October.
