Autumn Term 1

Once we have settled into our new classroom and have come together to form the Marvellous Mighty Mice of Year Two, we will be focusing on building up our core literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge, to help us make the best progress we can.

Reading is at the centre of literacy so we are making sure that reading is promoted and that all children develop enthusiasm for stories and books. There is a new 'Wild About Reading Corner' within the classroom and we will be reading stories by Roald Dahl especially this term, as part of the Roald Dahl Day held on Thursday 13th September.

In Literacy, we will be working on ensuring we have fluent and neat handwriting and can spell key high frequency words so that we can apply these to our writing with ease.

In Numeracy, we will be ensuring all children have essential knowledge and understanding of the amounts and numerals to 100 and can apply their knowledge to solving problems. Later, we will use this knowledge further to calculate confidently with amounts up to 100. We will also be using money to find totals and give change. The children will be expected to know the days of the week and months of the year and develop further their ability to read time on an analogue clock. Please point out the time different activities take or when events will take place outside the school hours, to help your child grasp a deeper understanding of time.

We have two topics this term covering History and Science. They are The Titanic and Properties of Materials.

Our learning in the creative subjects of music and art will therefore be based on the themes of water, ice and their properties.

Parent Information Meeting for Year 2

This will be held on Thursday 20th September from 4.15pm and last for approx. half an hour.

I will be outlining expectations for Year 2, how we teach different aspects, discussing the SATs Tests for the end of Key Stage 1 and how you can help your child at home.

We are also planning for Harvest to be held on Wednesday 10th October and a Fun Run on Friday 21st September to raise funds for our new school library! Please see letters and school news on the main page for more details regarding these events.

Looking forward to an exciting term!

Mrs Miller
