wc. 9th January 23

Week 1

The children have had a great start back to school for the New Year! It was great to see their enthusiastic faces and hear about their festive breaks.

In maths, we have been working hard to improve our multiplication and division knowledge – at the end of the week, the class loved exploring the 9 times-tables and some fascinating ways to remember or identify multiples of 9. Hopefully they’ll show them off at home! As we know, times-tables are a key skill in maths and we will be doing the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in June so please make sure we are getting into good habits practising regularly at home.

In English, we started our new writing focus on biographies. Miss Shepherd read a biography on Cleopatra to the class and we then looked at the ‘shape’ of this non-fiction writing style. The children worked well in pairs to rebuild the text after hearing it and considered the key features that would be needed. We then learnt about the great pharaoh, Hatshepsut, and had a class discussion about the ancient Egyptian thoughts on female leaders. After this, we used the iPads to do some additional research on Hatshepsut to give us more information ready for our sentence stacking lessons next week.

In music, Bex and Angie from Derbyshire Music Hub were back and the children were excited to dust off their instruments after a fabulous performance before Christmas. Below are some of the new pieces that we learnt along with the track to play along with. I will add any new pieces onto the week it is introduced going forward so that everyone can practise at home.

We also started our basketball lessons with Stedy and enjoyed a competitive science quiz on electricity! A fantastic start to 2023!!
