Reading and Writing

READING

There are many reading scheme books available as a free e.book to read on the Oxford Owl website. You will need to create a login to access them. If you search in the 'Levels' tab you will find a tab 'Oxford Level'. These levels or stages are the same as the books your child brings back from school so just check on the back of your child's reading book (if you don't know the current stage they are on) then select that level. You can then choose from a selection of books that your child should be able to manage to read with just a little support from yourself. They could select a book from a lower level for fully independent reading.

As well as continuing reading scheme books at their levels, you may want to look at books together that will help with Learning Projects or Topic work.

So for example this week....

Level 8 - Non-fiction: Pick Your Queen

Year 2 children should be able to independently read this text now. It has lots of interesting facts about Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria.

And you may also like to look at ....

Level 5 - A Biography: Julia Donaldson   (Easy read)

More challenging texts about famous people....

Level 10 - Life of Leonardo

Level 11 - Real Life Heroes (Emily Davison, Rosa Parks. Nelson Mandela)

Level 11- Our Siberian Journey

This website also has lots of help with helping you support your child with literacy skills . I have added a link below with a video about supporting children with story telling and creating stories.

WRITING

This week, we thought we would ask the children to write a character description for a story. The Reception children have been continuing to listen to Julia Donaldson stories and looked at The Gruffalo which I know the children in Year 1 and 2 know well. Should they want to, they can have a look at the resources on Mrs Braddock's Reception Early Years pages under Literacy and have a go at creating their own mysterious woodland creature.

Alternatively, they could use one of the Queen's they have learnt about to write a character description or create another Queen for a story.

I have also added an extra story to listen to about a King and a Queen squabbling about their palace.
