Intent
At Willington Primary School, we believe that it is important that our pupils learn from, as well as all about, different world religions. Through learning about different religions, our children develop their knowledge and respect of world faiths and beliefs, as well as having an understanding and awareness of these, and the values and traditions of individuals, societies and communities who follow these religions and beliefs. We encourage our children to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
It is the intent of Religions Education at Willington Primary School to develop a questioning approach to learning, using key questions and following the Derby City and Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus 2020 – 2025.
How Religious Education is Taught
Using the Derby City and Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus 2020-2025, the children learn about different religions throughout their time in school. They will also learn about many celebrations and traditions from different faith groups. The teaching follows a progression map (a link to which can be found below) which allows the children to learn about a variety of different religions and to build on their knowledge which has been learned earlier in their lives.
EYFS: - Religious Education is taught as part of a thematic approach and focuses on the religions: Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism.
KS1: - Religious Education is taught using key questions, focusing on the religions: Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism.
Lower KS2: - Religious Education is taught using knowledge gaied from the previous Key Stage, using key questions, focusing on the religions: Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism.
Upper KS2: - Religious Education is taught using key questions, built on their learning from earlier in the
Key Stage, focusing on the religions: Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism, as well as non-religious beliefs including Humanism.
This understanding is built upon as the children move through the school. (See the Religious Education Progression Roadmap below for further information).
