  • Halle Concert- Derby Arena

    Fri 16 Jun 2023

I had the pleasure of joining the Year 4 children at the Halle Concert this morning. The children performed at the Derby Arena alongside hundreds of other children, whilst accompanying the Halle orchestra. It was a joy to see the children  experiencing something so incredible—they played the violin and cello with great confidence too!

This event was everything and more that I had hoped it would be!’

  • The WPS Recycling Station!

    Wed 24 May 2023

We are proud to share that the WPS Recycling Station is now officially open! We have been awarded a certificate to celebrate successfully achieving 100% recycling and having zero waste sent to landfill for the last 7 years. Well done to the Willington team!

  • International Women's Day

    Mon 08 May 2023

This week, the children have been discussing the word 'equity' in school. We introduced the theme for International Women's Day - #embraceequity and all had a go at doing the IWD pose to represent this. Super listening from the Happy Hedgehogs (Reception) class too. We are very fortunate at WPS to have such an incredible range of literature in our school library, that explains the importance of being treated equally and fairly, regardless of race, gender, faith or any of the protected characteristics. The children have been encouraged to choose one of these books at their next library session.

  • Great Willington Bake Off- Kings Coronation Celebrations!

    Fri 05 May 2023

We enjoyed celebrating the Kings Coronation at WPS today with friends and family and our Great Willington Bake Off competition. The staff, children and the WI judges felt that the standard was extraordinary. Well done to everyone who entered a cake. We all loved looking at the different bakes and seeing the creativity of our pupils. We hope they were as tasty as they looked! Thanks to all of the families who were able to join us for the get together on the school playground and field. The children sang beautifully—despite the technical hitch—and it was so good to see the children demonstrate their musicality, memory muscle (remembering all of the words!) and smiling faces in the sunshine. Thanks to our wonderful kitchen team created a delicious coronation picnic for the children at lunchtime! Enjoy the long weekend and the Coronation Celebrations.

  • Author Visit!

    Mon 27 Mar 2023

We have had an incredibly busy week at WPS! We started the week with a visit from Matt Oldfield, the children’s author of The Ultimate Football Hero series. Matt visited every classroom and spoke to the boys and girls about his early childhood and life as author. The feedback from the children and the staff has been brilliant: ‘ It was a really good session. He taught us about what it is really like to be an author’ (Martha Y6), ‘I enjoyed learning about how long it takes to actually write a book!’ (Eleanor Year 4) ‘ I thought it was great that we could actually buy his books and also have our own books- that we have already bought – signed by him and having his autograph is great!’ (Theo Y4) .

  • World Book Day!

    Fri 03 Mar 2023

We celebrated World Book Day at Willington today, by inviting parents in to school to our 'Book and Breakfast' event. It was lovely to see so many families listening to children read and enjoying being in school. The children (and staff) enjoyed dressing up as a book character too. A great day to celebrate the love of reading!

  • i-vengers at WPS

Fri 17 Feb 2023 Mrs Spencer Lovesey

We are excited to share that we are aspiring to be an i-vengers school this half term. The i-vengers programme is a peer led Digital Leader programme which seeks to raise the understanding and response to online risks by primary age children.

At Willington, we have selected two children in each KS2 class to become an 'i-vengers hero'. They will carry out various digital tasks over the remainder of the school year to meet the criteria of the i-vengers award. Watch this space for further hero updates...

  • Children's Mental Health Week

    Fri 10 Feb 2023

The children across school have been completing ‘Feelings Journals’ each day, to expose them to using a range of vocabulary when describing our feelings and to encourage them to spend time reflecting on different emotions. We ended the week with our ‘Dress to Express’ day, where children (and staff!) were invited to wear clothing that represents them: their personality, achievements and interests. The children had the opportunity to connect with each other in class and to celebrate how diverse we all are. Well done to everyone for taking part in this event.
